New 'Cyclists proceed with caution' pavement "sign" at the end of the Crouch Street East cycle lane.
There is a lot to take in at this junction, and nothing bar this "sign" to aid the cyclist, or prompt them as to where hazards may be:
There isn't a dedicated light phase for cyclists joining the road, and as such cyclists must be aware of vehicles approaching from Headgate (right) and St Johns Street (ahead), as well as pedestrians crossing either Head Street (left) or St Johns Street, depending on their journey.
Elsewhere in Colchester cyclists are told to dismount at every opportunity (see #19255), yet at this busy, town centre location cyclists are effectively told to "get on with it", just be cautious...
But wouldn't we be "red light jumping"?
Because of the nature of this junction and the lack of cycle lane light phase, it's inevitable that some cyclists will join the road when motor vehicles are on red, but while pedestrians are on green. It seems this is a grey area!
